Side Effects of Salagen

Salagen is a medication used to treat dry mouth. Dry mouth can be caused by Sjogren's Syndrome or throat and mouth cancers. Salagen can help alleviate dry mouth but might also cause side effects ranging from merely annoying to very serious.

    • Sweating, nausea, chills, flushing, diarrhea, increased salivation, dizziness, frequent urination, runny nose, fatigue and lack of appetite are all common side effects of Salagen.

    Rare Side Effects

    • Rare side effects of Salagen include vomiting, rash, headache, flu-like symptoms, hypertension, stomach pain, sore throat, lazy eyes, edema and watering eyes.

    Serious Side Effects

    • One serious side effect of Salagen is worsening or new lung problems such as wheezing, coughing and phlegm. Nosebleeds, muscle pain, shakiness, eye irritation, rapid heartbeat, voice changes and a bad taste in the mouth are all also considered serious effects for which patients should seek medical attention.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions to Salagen are characterized by swelling of mouth, lips, tongue and throat, trouble breathing, rashes or itching. If you experience these side effects, seek medical attention.

    Overdose

    • The following side effects may indicate an overdose of Salagen: shakiness, confusion, vomiting, stomach cramps, vision problems, headache, watering eyes, profuse sweating, severe breathing trouble, extreme changes in heartbeat and dizziness.

    Other Medications

    • Salagen may reduce the effectiveness of antihistamines. Consult your doctor if you are taking both Salagen and antihistamines.
