Side Effects of Ursodiol
Ursodiol is a medication prescribed to prevent and dissolve certain types of gallstones and to treat liver cirrhosis. Available under the brands Actigall and Urso and also in generic form, ursodiol is helpful for patients who do not need to have their gallbladder removed or who should not have surgery. Numerous side effects are possible.-
Gastrointestinal Side Effects

The most common side effects associated with ursodiol are gastrointestinal and usually are temporary. They include constipation or diarrhea, gas, indigestion, loss of appetite, metallic taste, stomach upset, nausea and vomiting.
Other Common Effects

Other common and usually temporary side effects include coughing, depression, dizziness, dry or itchy skin, fatigue, hair thinning, headache, insomnia, back pain, muscle or joint pain, nervousness, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat and sweating.
Serious Side Effects

Side effects calling for medical attention include prolonged diarrhea, nausea or vomiting and severe abdominal pain, particularly in the upper right side. Frequent urination or pain during urinating also should be reported to a doctor.
Allergic Reaction

Although unlikely, some people have an allergic reaction to ursodiol. Signs are rash or hives, itching, difficulty swallowing or difficulty breathing.
Drug Interactions

Ursodiol may interact with some other drugs and supplements, including antacids containing aluminum, cholestyramine, clofibrate, colestipol, medications that lower cholesterol, medications that contain estrogen, and vitamins and herbal products.
