Side Effects of Docusate

Docusate is an over-the-counter medication that relieves constipation by keeping stools from becoming hard or dry. Commonly called a stool softener, docusate is available in brand names such as Colace and Dialose. Side effects are uncommon.
  1. Most Likely Effects

    • The most likely side effects with docusate include stomach upset or cramping. With the liquid and syrup forms, throat irritation and a bitter taste may occur. Other possible side effects include bloating and nausea.

    Serious Side Effects

    • More serious side effects may call for medical attention. These include lack of bowel movement, rectal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, skin rash and vomiting.

    Dependence

    • Frequent use of docusate can result in dependence, meaning the person may be continuously constipated when not taking the medication.

    Overuse

    • Taking too much docusate can cause diarrhea. This may result in dehydration and loss of essential nutrients, muscle cramps or weakness, and dizziness.

    Contraindications

    • People with intestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis may not be able to use docusate. Additionally, people taking docusate should not take aspirin or mineral oil.
