Signs & Symptoms of a Blastocystis Hominis Infection

Blastocystis hominis is a microscopic parasite sometimes detected in the stools of people with gastrointestinal problems. But because the parasite is also sometimes found in the stools of healthy people, it has not been determined whether the parasite actually creates the symptoms or if the symptoms are due to other causes.
  1. Gastrointestinal Symptoms

    • Symptoms associated with a blastocystis hominis infection include gastrointestinal problems. These could be abdominal cramps, anal itching, bloating, diarrhea, gas or nausea.

    Fatigue

    • Fatigue also is sometimes reported as a symptom in people with a blastocystis hominis infection.

    No Symptoms

    • Many people have no symptoms at all, and the infection is discovered only during a routine examination. Physicians generally do not treat the infection if there are no symptoms.

    Difficulties in Diagnosis

    • When blastocystis is detected during testing to determine the cause of gastrointestinal problems, the tests often find other organisms as well. These are more likely to be the cause of symptoms, which makes it difficult for physicians to determine whether blastocystis is causing any symptoms.

    Resolution

    • Blastocystis hominis typically disappears by itself, although it may take months or years. If gastrointestinal symptoms last longer than a few days, a physician may prescribe medication.
