How to Stop Stomach Problems

Stomach problems commonly affect many individuals, and the causes for these problems can range from simple indigestion to more serious culprits like stomach ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS. However, as unsavory as diarrhea, constipation, and excessive gas are, they don't have to put a damper on your life, as there are many options you can take to help stop stomach problems.

Incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Many digestion issues can be attributed to lack of essential nutrients that fruits and vegetables provide, like fiber. If you find it difficult or unappealing to eat fruits and vegetables, try naturally juicing them and ingesting them that way.

Decrease the intake of spicy foods that can irritate your stomach. Foods high in hot spices like pepper can agitate your stomach and damage the mucosal lining that protects the stomach from its highly acidic contents. Burning the lining of your stomach can also cause gastrointestinal distress and pain. There is no need to completely eliminate hot and spicy foods from your diet, but it is important to remember that moderation and balance are ideal when eating these foods.

Look for symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, or acid reflux. Acid reflux occurs when the stomach regurgitates liquid into the esophagus, essentially destroying the esophageal lining. This can cause chest pain commonly referred to as heartburn. If you suspect your stomach problems are caused by acid reflux, discuss your concerns with your doctor to determine the proper treatment steps to take.

Report your symptoms to your physician. Stomach problems such as diarrhea, gas, and indigestion are common and can be easily treated with medications like Pepto Bismol and Beano, but if you are experiencing constant physical pain or prolonged symptoms, there may be an underlying cause that should be addressed.
