Preparation Options for a Colonoscopy
During a colonoscopy, the doctor will insert a long, thin tube with a tiny video camera on the end into your rectum. He is looking for any polyps or abnormal tissues that could possibly indicate colon cancer. To prepare for the colonoscopy, you will need to follow your doctor's instructions to ensure the colon is properly cleared.-
Scheduling Your Appointment
-
When your doctor determines that a colonoscopy is required, an appointment will be made for you, usually several weeks in advance. Your doctor will go over your specific preparation requirements. You will need to find someone to go with you to your colonoscopy, as you will be sedated during the procedure, and cannot drive for at least 12 hours after the procedure.
Stopping Medications and Supplements
-
One week prior to your colonoscopy, you need to stop taking any pain medications, other than acetaminophen. Iron supplements, and medications containing iron, can cause discoloration of the colon and must also be stopped. Consult your doctor for guidance if you require the use of diabetic medications, blood thinners, MAOIs or pain relievers. Total fasting from medications may be required up to 4 to 6 hours prior to the procedure.
Food Requirements
-
For at least 24 hours prior to the colonoscopy, avoid solid foods. Some doctors may have you start cutting out solid foods as far as three days ahead of time. Soft foods, such as Jell-O, are okay to consume, up to the day of the procedure, as long as they are not red, blue or purple in color, as this distorts the color of the colon. A total fast may be required the day of the procedure.
Liquid Requirements
-
For at least 24 hours prior to the exam, you need to avoid solid foods and opaque liquids. Opaque liquids include milks, including soy milk, smoothies and milkshakes. Clear liquids, such as water, coffee, tea, pulp-free juices, pop/soda and broths are okay. Avoid liquids that are red, blue or purple, as they can distort the color of the colon. Also avoid any alcoholic beverages. You may be required to fast completely on the day of the exam, up to 4 to 6 hours prior to it starting.
Cleanse the Colon
-
Your doctor may require you to further cleanse your colon by taking laxatives or performing enemas. A special bowel preparation may be given to you, which requires consumption of a full glass every 15 to 20 minutes for a period of 3 to 4 hours. When taking a laxative, you will have to take a five-minute walk about every ten minutes to facilitate the excretion. Keep close to bathrooms during this process, due to an increased need to use them.
