What Is Prilosec?
-
Function
-
Prilosec works to blocks the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that's responsible for making acid.
Effects
-
By inhibiting the enzyme, less acid is generated; as a result symptoms decrease, the esophagus and stomach begin to recover and further damages to the digestive system are prevented.
Usage
-
Prilosec is available by prescription only and taken with water (usually twice daily) prior to eating.
Dosage
-
The specific dosage and duration of Prilosec therapy depends on the condition it's being used for; 20-40 mg per day and a time period of four to eight weeks is the most frequent; individuals with various chronic conditions may take Prilosec for a longer period of time to keep their symptoms at bay.
Side Effects
-
Although side effects from Prilosec are unlikely, they include diarrhea, dizziness, headaches, nausea, skin irritations and vomiting.
Warning
-
Prilosec can affect the absorption and effectiveness of other medications such as Coumadin, Dilantin, Lanoxin, Nizoral, Valium and certain other anti-fungal, anti-anxiety, blood-thinning and heart medicines.
