Watch for symptoms. The classic symptom of dysentery is bloody diarrhea, particularly if you reside in or have traveled to a tropical region. Stomach cramps can also appear as a milder symptom.

Make an appointment with a doctor to have a stool analysis performed. The doctor may recommend additional testing procedures such as ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis.

Take any medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. A common drug administered to treat dysentery is metronidazole, in adults taken as two 400mg tablets three times a day for five days. If a perforation of the intestinal wall has occurred, a hospital stay may be required.

Even if the symptoms subside, be sure to schedule a followup visit with your doctor to ensure the disease is completely gone from your system.
