What Is Amitiza Used For?

Chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome are disruptive conditions that can last for years with little resolution of symptoms. Since the cause of these disorders is unknown, dietary and exercise modifications are first-line treatment. Effective medication options are limited. Amitiza is an FDA-approved medication developed by Sucampo Pharmaceuticals and distributed by Takeda Pharmaceuticals for chronic idiopathic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation.
  1. Significance

    • Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are disorders characterized by altered bowel function, abdominal pain and discomfort and bloating. Approximately 12 million Americans suffer from IBS with constipation (IBS-C), symptoms of which continue for 5 to 10 years. CIC is the cause for approximately 5.7 million hospital visits each year. These disorders are disruptive, adversely affecting lifestyle and work function. Since the cause for the conditions is unknown, symptomatic treatment is usually prescribed.

    Chronic Constipation

    • Constipation is loosely defined as 3 bowel movements per week, where the stool is small and dry and passed with much difficulty. Headache, nausea, sluggishness and abdominal pain are also included as symptoms of constipation. Chronic constipation where there is no known cause, such as medication or illness lasting for at least 6 months is known as chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC).

    Treatment

    • Normally treatment for constipation includes addition of exercise, fiber supplementation, fluid intake, stool softeners and laxatives, after determining whether medication may be the cause. Medications for chronic constipation include lactulose, lubiprostone and polyethylene glycol. Amitiza is lubiprostone, approved in 2006 by the FDA for the treatment of CIC.

    Product Information

    • Amitiza is approved for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults and for treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in women aged 18 years and older. Amitiza is not for those with a bowel blockage or who suspect blockage, or who have severe diarrhea. Amitiza is a gel tablet taken twice daily with food. Orange tablets containing 24 mcg of lubiprostone are prescribed for CIC; pink tablets containing 8 mcg are for IBS-C.

    Effects

    • Many patients reported a bowel movement within the first 24 hours of taking the medication. In clinical studies, patients averaged 5 to 6 bowel movements weekly. Nausea, diarrhea and shortness of breath may occur after taking Amitiza; always check with your healthcare provider regarding recurring or severe symptoms. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headache and abdominal pain, which can be attributed to the condition as well as the medication.
