Symptoms of Colonic Volvulus

Colonic volvulus, or "twisted bowel," occurs when a section of the bowel twists around its axis. This causes a partial or complete block of the colon, the possibility of injuring the bowel, and the likelihood of tissue dying due to a lack of oxygen in the blood. It occurs often in people over the age of 60 with a history of constipation.
  1. Pain

    • A twisted colon can be very painful. People with colonic volvulus often suffer from cramping abdominal pain.

    Bloating

    • Severe bloating or distention of the abdomen occurs with this condition. It is usually asymmetric or uneven.

    Constipation

    • People with colonic volvulus experience complete constipation.

    Examination

    • A physical examination will reveal tenderness in the abdomen, with the presence of a mass. An examination of the rectum will usually show it absent of feces.

    Time Frame

    • According to the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, people typically experience symptoms for 3 to 4 days before going to the hospital for treatment. About half of them report having a similar condition before.
