Acid Reflux Cough Symptoms

Acid reflux is a common condition that plagues those of all ages and backgrounds, and causes a variety of symptoms including coughing. Though a bothersome condition, it is completely treatable as long as action is taken as soon as possible.
  1. Significance

    • According to Medicine.net, acid reflux occurs when the stomach brings digested foods back up the esophagus. (For more information on acid reflux, see the link below.) This irritates the esophagus, which results in coughing. There are certain symptoms that distinguish coughing due to acid reflux from other forms of chronic coughing.

    Throat Inflammation

    • As the stomach chronically re-releases acid back up the throat, this causes wear and tear on the throat. This results in a hoarse voice and painful coughing.

    Larynx and Lung Damage

    • Acid reflux that reaches the larynx can also pass into the lungs, which is called aspiration. If left untreated, this can lead to scarring over time (called fibrosis) and even pneumonia.

    Treatment

    • Taking just any medication for coughing, such as those for allergies or colds, will not work. To reduce coughing, you must treat acid reflux itself. You should see your doctor, who will diagnose the severity of your condition and prescribe the proper medication.

    Considerations

    • Simple changes can also make a difference. Smoking will exacerbate your coughing. Avoid foods and beverages that are spicy or contain excess caffeine. Avoid eating late and going to sleep soon after, as acid reflux commonly happens when one is asleep.
