What Is Acid Indigestion?

Acid indigestion typically causes a burning sensation in the chest and sometimes the throat as well. This is often described as heartburn. For many it is an occasional problem. However, for some it is a regular occurrence and may become serious. According to an article in "Archives of Internal Medicine" contributing factors are lifestyle, work habits, foods, beverages and obesity.
  1. Esophageal Sphincter

    • When you swallow food, it goes down the esophagus to the lower esophageal sphincter. This valve opens to let food into the stomach. If it doesn't close properly, stomach acid can come up the esophagus.

    Stomach Acid

    • Stomach acid is hydrochloric acid. The cells in the stomach protect the stomach from damage as the acid digests the food. Cells in the esophagus do not have this protection and can be harmed by acid backing up.

    Acid Reflux

    • When stomach acid backs up the esophagus and into the throat, it is called acid reflux. When this is condition is chronic it becomes gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

    Potential

    • Long-lasting acid indigestion (GERD) causes inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis). This may lead to erosion or a precancerous condition called Barrett's Esophagus.

    Warning

    • Any acid indigestion that occurs more often than twice a week for several weeks should be evaluated by a doctor.
