Acid Reflux Symptoms in Children
When your child has acid reflux, it may be somewhat difficult for you to really establish the condition, especially if your child can't quite put into word what is bothering him. While it is more than likely that children will experience some of the same symptoms that an adult would have with acid reflux, there are a few behaviors that you can look for to determine whether your child is dealing with this particular condition. Most will obviously revolve around mealtime, but they can "flare-up" during times of play or even rest.-
Poor Eating
-
Many children suffering from acid reflux may begin to not eat much or eat less than they would normally during mealtimes. This would have a lot to do with the way they feel either during or after meals. This may also cause a child to experience weight loss.
Irritability
-
Another indicative behavior of acid reflux would be a certain level of irritability after the child has eaten. This particular symptom may manifest in infants, toddlers and school-age kids, and it has a lot to due with the way they feel, much like the poor eating habits.
Nausea & Vomiting
-
Children who are suffering from acid reflux may also complain about an upset stomach soon after they've eaten, played or even napped. This upset stomach may be so bad that your child will actually vomit.
Pain
-
Acid reflux can also prompt a child to suffer and complain of pain or discomfort in the chest or abdomen (just above the belly button). This can sometimes accompanied by a sour taste or burning sensation in the back of the throat.
Cough
-
Many kids dealing with acid reflux will suffer from an almost persistent cough that may "flare-up" even more so during bedtime (while lying down). You may also notice that your child has become hoarse or even suffer from sore throats. Both sympyoms are indications of acid reflux.
Infections
-
Children with acid reflux can also suffer from frequent infections of the sinuses, ears or lungs. This may bring about stuffiness, congestion and wheezing.
