Most Americans do not get enough fiber in their diets, and thus they suffer from chronic constipation and other digestive disorders, are overweight, have high cholesterol and are otherwise unhealthy. Engaging in a lifestyle that promotes a diet high in fiber can help these and many other ailments.-

The American Dietetic Association recommends that adults get 20 to 35 grams of fiber in their diet per day. High-fiber diets encompass consuming 35 to 45 grams of fiber each day.

High-fiber diets are used to help manage weight, control hunger and ease constipation and digestive discomfort. They also may prevent conditions such as diverticulitis and may help to reduce cholesterol.
Foods

To get the most fiber, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and beans. These foods should be consumed at least several times a week--although every day is best for the highest-fiber diet.

There are many supplements available on the market to increase daily fiber intake. There are tablets, pills or wafers that can be chewed or swallowed and powder that can be added to food or drink.
