Medical Diverticulitis Symptoms

Diverticula are small, bulging pouches that can occur in your digestive tract. A person with Diverticulosis has these pouches, usually in the colon. Diverticulitis is an infection or inflammation of Diverticulosis. The symptoms can vary from moderate to severe, but the condition can be serious enough for hospitalization and even surgery.

Pain

• The pain from Diverticulitis is similar to that of appendicitis--severe and sudden--but it is more often on the left side, while the appendix is on the right. You may also have pain during urination.

Digestion

• Symptoms for Diverticulitis will almost always include nausea and often include vomiting, constipation or diarrhea. These symptoms will become worse over several days.

Bloating and Tenderness

• Bloating and tenderness of the stomach are common symptoms of Diverticulitis. They can be accompanied by frequent urination.

Fever

• Since Diverticulitis is an inflammation or infection, it often brings on fever. The fever can go higher as the infection worsens.

Considerations

• Diverticulitis can be quite serious if a small tear develops in an infected pouch. It is important to seek medical attention if Diverticulitis is suspected.
