Homeopathic Remedies for Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is painful and, according to the Mayo Clinic, can cause damage to the esophagus and lining of the stomach. Home remedies for acid reflux include using gravity to aid digestion, eating smaller meals and avoiding triggers. People with acid reflux who do not experience relief after using home remedies or over-the-counter medications should consider seeing a physician to rule out a more serious condition such as hiatial hernia.
  1. Gravity

    • Sitting or standing up for at least 30 minutes after eating uses gravity to help food stay in the stomach. Wait to lie down until at least a half hour after eating your meal.

    Small Meals

    • Eating smaller amounts of food can prevent the stomach from overfilling and producing extra acid needed to break down large meals.

    Elevation

    • Babies and adults with acid reflux may benefit from having the head of their mattresses elevated by inserting a telephone book between the wooden base and the bed mattress. This will help food stay down in the stomach.

    Burping

    • Burping a baby while he is sitting up in your lap rather than over your shoulder can keep air from building up in the baby's stomach and reduce reflux.

    Baking Soda

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, drinking baking soda mixed with water may provide temporary relief for acid reflux. But if this method is overused, baking soda could increase pressure and gas in the stomach and make reflux worse.

    Cream of Tartar

    • Drinking cream of tartar added to water can neutralize stomach acid and relieve the burning feeling caused by acid reflux.

    Diary

    • Fried or spicy foods, caffeine, onion, garlic, mints and alcohol can aggravate acid reflux. Keeping a food diary of what triggers reflux can help people avoid their personal triggers.
