Ulcerative Colitis Secondary Symptoms

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD) that occurs when the lining of the large intestine becomes agitated and swollen. Doctors are unsure as to the cause of ulcerative colitis, though speculation among medical professionals lists stress, genetic disposition and low immune function as possibilities. There is currently no cure for ulcerative colitis. Primary symptoms include intestinal cramping, diarrhea and persistent fatigue.
  1. Rectal Bleeding

    • A secondary symptom of ulcerative colitis is rectal bleeding. Inflammation in the lower quadrant of the colon can result in irritation and cause the skin to chaff especially during and after a bowel movement.

    Acne

    • Acne can be a secondary symptom of ulcerative colitis due to lowered immune function.

    Weight Loss

    • Weight loss often occurs in individuals who suffer from ulcerative colitis because the inflamed colon is unable to properly absorb nutrients from food.

    Dehydration

    • Frequent diarrhea drains fluid from the intestinal tract and causes dehydration as a secondary symptom.

    Fever

    • The inflammation in the colon can cause the body as a whole to experience fever, which can result in night sweats.
