Perform a physical examination to determine if underlying problems exist.

Determine whether surgery is needed to fix the underlying problem.

Feel and press the abdomen to detect any swelling and tenderness in the area as this may demonstrate whether fluids are collecting.

Listen to bowel sounds.

Check for signs of dehydration, difficulty breathing, and low blood pressure.

Perform procedures as needed: Blood tests, Samples of fluid from the abdomen, CT scan, Chest x-rays, or Peritoneal Lavage.
