What happens to food that is not digested and absorbed?
Food that is not digested and absorbed passes through the large intestine, also known as the colon. In the colon, water and electrolytes are absorbed from the remaining food material, and bacteria ferment the undigested carbohydrates, producing gases such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane. The remaining waste material, along with these gases, forms stool, which is stored in the rectum until it is eliminated through defecation.
