What is a digestive system made of?
The digestive system is a group of organs working together to convert food into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body. The main organs of the digestive system are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. The mouth is where food is chewed and broken down by saliva, which contains enzymes that begin the process of digestion. The esophagus is a muscular tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. The stomach is a J-shaped organ that secretes gastric juices to further break down food. The small intestine is a long, coiled tube where most of the absorption of nutrients occurs. The large intestine is responsible for absorbing water and electrolytes from food and storing waste products. The rectum is the final part of the large intestine and stores waste until it is passed out of the body through the anus.
