How to Soothe Bloating

Bloating is a feeling of fullness and tightness in the abdomen. Constipation, food intolerance and overeating are the most common culprits of bloating, but bowel obstruction, acites and cancer can also cause it. Bloating can cause discomfort and pain, abdominal distention and frequent burping and the passing of gas. Severe bloating can reduce your quality of life, so it's important to treat it as soon as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Drink a cup of peppermint tea before each meal until the bloating diminishes. Peppermint relaxes the abdominal muscles and increase bile flow, which aids digestion and the expelling of gas.

    • 2

Eat a serving of probiotic yogurt once a day. The lactobacillus and bifidobacterium in yogurt soothes bloating and diminishes gas. Continue to eat yogurt daily after the bloating is gone to improve digestive health and prevent future episodes of bloat.

    • 3

Take over-the-counter medications that contain simethicone or activated charcoal to relieve bloating. Read the warnings and directions carefully before taking them.

    • 4

Deal with the underlying issue. If bloating is caused by a specific food intolerance avoid or minimize consumption of that food. Increase your intake of fiber if you're bloated due to constipation. Increase your fiber slowly, adding 2 to 3 g of fiber to your total intake each day until you get to 30 g.
