What Cures Roundworm?
Nematodes, otherwise known as roundworms, are at least 15,000 species strong, many of which act as parasites in both humans and pets. From thread-size pin worms to Guinea worms that can reach up to 3 feet long, roundworms feed off a creature's nutrients, usually in the intestines, until removed by medicinal means. In different doses, the same medicines are used in humans and pets to rid the body of roundworms.-
Treatment
-
Though larger, rarer varieties of roundworms, like the Guinea worm, often are removed via surgical means, most common varieties of nematodes are removed from the bodies of humans or pets through medicine. These antiparasitic medicines are administered in doses depending on the size of the pet or human, to be ingested over a series of days. The type of medication used depends on the type of roundworm present, often observed in the feces, via microscope if necessary.
Types of Medications
-
The most common type of roundworm infection is by Ascaris lumbricoides, which is treated with mebendazole, pyrantel or albendazole. Except for pyrantel, these drugs also are used to rid the body of hookworms, trichinosis and whipworms too. Other drugs, like diethylcarbamazine, ivermectin and thiabendazole, are used to fight different roundworm infestations, like loiasis, river blindness, threadworm or lymphatic filariasis.
Other Meds
-
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, anemic patients can be prescribed oral iron to counter any potential nutrient loss during the treatment. Doctors and veterinarians also may prescribe prednisone, antibiotics, antihistamines and other medications to ease symptoms or fight another suspected bacterial infection. Dietary supplements also may be recommended to help ward off the parasite and improve overall health during and after treatment.
Prevention
-
Since roundworm infection is most common in unsanitary conditions, the best way to prevent these parasites from taking hold of your intestinal tract is a good hygiene regimen, eating fully cooked food, avoid being bitten by mosquitoes and coming in contact with animal feces. A variety of foods also may help prevent roundworms from taking root, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, including green tea, olive oil, clove, garlic, wormwood and turmeric.
