Pyloric Valve Location

Location and Function
-
The Mayo Clinic describes the pyloric valve as a gateway between the stomach and small intestine. It serves to regulate the movement of food out of the stomach and prevents bile in the small intestine from moving back into the stomach.
Bile Reflux
-
When the pyloric valve fails to close completely, bile can move from the small intestine into the stomach. This can cause gastritis, eventually leading to erosion of the stomach lining and bleeding--or gastric ulcer--according to W. M. Capper of the Bristol Royal Infirmary.
Pyloric Stenosis
-
If the muscle controlling the pyloric valve grows too large, the opening to the small intestine is restricted. Texas Pediatric Associates describes pyloric stenosis as a restriction that prevents food and liquids from moving into the small intestine. This can result in dehydration and malnutrition, but can be corrected by a surgical procedure.
