How d you check nasogastric tube feeding residual?
To check the nasogastric (NG) tube feeding residual, follow these steps:
1. Wash Your Hands: Begin by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water to prevent the introduction of bacteria.
2. Gather Supplies: You will need:
- A 60 mL syringe
- Normal saline (usually provided by the healthcare facility)
- Feeding tube clamp or a piece of clean tape
- Gloves
3. Put on Gloves: Wear gloves to protect your hands from contact with the patient's secretions.
4. Clamp the Tube: Gently clamp the NG tube or use a piece of clean tape to temporarily stop the flow of the feeding formula.
5. Aspirate the Residual: Connect the 60 mL syringe to the NG tube. Slowly pull back on the syringe plunger to gently aspirate the residual contents of the stomach. Pull the syringe back until you reach a resistance.
6. Note the Amount: Record the amount of residual obtained in milliliters (mL) on the patient's chart or care plan.
7. Gently Reintroduce Residual: If the residual volume is less than 100-150 mL, gently reintroduce it back into the stomach by slowly pushing it back through the syringe with the tube still clamped.
8. Unclamp the Tube: After reintroducing the residual or if it was more than 150 mL, unclamp the tube or remove the tape to allow the feeding to resume.
9. Document: Document the procedure and any observations, including the amount of residual obtained and the patient's response, in the patient's medical record.
Remember, these steps should be performed as per the protocol established by your healthcare facility. If you have any concerns or uncertainties, consult with the attending physician or nurse for guidance.
