Major food digested in the stomach?

The main food groups digested in the stomach are proteins and fats.

* Proteins: The stomach secretes hydrochloric acid and an enzyme called pepsin that break down proteins. Pepsin breaks down proteins into smaller peptides, which are further broken down into amino acids in the small intestine.

* Fats: The stomach doesn't play a major role in the digestion of fats. However, it does produce a small amount of an enzyme called gastric lipase that starts to break down fats into fatty acids and glycerol. The majority of fat digestion occurs in the small intestine.

Carbohydrates are not significantly digested in the stomach. They are broken down by enzymes in the saliva, mouth and small intestine.
