How does the digestive system of a pig work?
1. MouthPigs have a large mouth with sharp teeth that they use to tear and grind their food. As they eat, their saliva mixes with the food to begin the process of digestion.
2. Esophagus
The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. As the pig swallows, the esophagus contracts to push the food down into the stomach.
3. Stomach
The stomach is a large, J-shaped organ that secretes gastric juices to further break down the food. The stomach also churns the food, mixing it with the gastric juices to form a semi-liquid mixture called chyme.
4. Small intestine
The small intestine is a long, thin tube that is lined with villi, which are small, finger-like projections that help to absorb nutrients from the food. The small intestine also secretes enzymes that help to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
5. Large intestine
The large intestine is a shorter, wider tube that is lined with colonic crypts, which are small, gland-like structures that secrete mucus and absorb water from the chyme. The large intestine also contains beneficial bacteria that help to digest food and produce vitamins.
6. Rectum
The rectum is the final part of the digestive system. It stores the waste products of digestion until they are expelled from the body through the anus.
