The muscular tube of the digestive system is called the alimentary canal. It starts at the mouth and ends at the anus. It is through the alimentary canal that food is ingested, digested, absorbed and the waste products from digestion eliminated. The alimentary canal is made up of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus. The mouth is where food is ingested and chewed, the pharynx is the passageway from the mouth to the esophagus, the esophagus is the tube that carries food from the pharynx to the stomach, the stomach is where food is broken down by acids and enzymes, the small intestine is where most of the digestion and absorption of nutrients occurs, the large intestine is where water and electrolytes are absorbed and the waste products from digestion are formed, the rectum is the last portion of the large intestine and the anus is where the waste products are expelled.
