Where does the food that cannot be digested go?

Undigested food moves through the large intestine (colon) and rectum and eventually leaves the body as stool (feces). The process of digestion begins in the mouth, where saliva breaks down carbohydrates. The food then travels to the stomach, where it is further broken down by stomach acid and enzymes. The partially digested food then moves to the small intestine, where nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream. Any remaining undigested food moves to the large intestine, where water is absorbed from it. The stool becomes more solid and eventually leaves the body through the rectum.
