What be broken down by stomach acid?

Proteins

Stomach acid, a highly acidic solution present in the stomach, primarily targets proteins for breakdown. Proteins, essential components of living organisms, are large biomolecules consisting of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. The highly acidic environment of stomach acid, achieved through the secretion of hydrochloric acid (HCl), denatures the proteins and disrupts their structural integrity. This weakens the protein structure and subsequently allows them to be broken down into smaller fragments by enzymes known as proteases. Proteases act by hydrolyzing peptide bonds, thereby facilitating the digestion of proteins into individual amino acids or small peptides. These resulting smaller molecules can then be readily absorbed further along the digestive tract.
