Reflux & Tea Use

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as reflux, is a condition when stomach acids splash into the esophagus. This is usually due to a weakening of the muscles in the lower esophagus. Symptoms of GERD include heartburn and discomfort in the chest that can be mitigated or exacerbated by dietary choices.
  1. Beverages

    • Caffeinated beverages including coffee, black tea, mint tea and soda are known to exacerbate the symptoms associated with reflux. For patients suffering from GERD, all black teas such as breakfast and Earl Grey teas should be avoided.

    Herbal Tea

    • Non-mint, herbal and red teas such as chamomile and rooibos are recommended for those with reflux. Additionally, decaffeinated tea is often well-tolerated. Citrus tends to exacerbate symptoms of GERD, so verbena-type teas should be used with caution. Try starting with small quantities to see how your body reacts.

    Extract Supplements

    • As of 2010, there is no conclusive evidence that green tea extract is beneficial for intestinal disorders, but in popular culture, green tea extract for intestinal disorders is believed to be beneficial. Unfortunately, for patients suffering from reflux, green tea extract can exacerbate the problem and should not be used.
