Prilosec: Indications

Prilosec, or the generic omeprazole, is a medication used in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. The medication is indicated for short-term treatment protocol, such as 4 to 8 weeks. It is available over-the-counter as a treatment for frequent heartburn and by prescription for other disorders. Ulcers

• Prilosec is effective in the treatment of duodenal and stomach ulcers that are caused by an excess of stomach acid. Sometimes the medication is used along with antibiotics if the ulcers are caused by an infection from the Helicobacter pylori bacteria, according to the Mayo Clinic website.

Inflammation of the Esophagus

• Esophagitis is an inflammation that breaks down the tissue of the esophagus. It is caused by allergies, oral medications, infections or stomach acid reflux. Prilosec helps heal and prevent further erosion.

GERD and Related Diseases

• Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a condition where the lower esophageal sphincter opens by itself, or does not close properly, and allows stomach contents to rise up into the esophagus.
