How to Change an Ileostomy Pouch

An ileostomy is a surgical procedure that separates the small intestine from the large intestine. The small intestine is then routed out through a hole in your abdomen called a stoma. Gas and feces pass through the stoma into a collection pouch that attaches to the body and surrounds the stoma.

The pouch must be emptied several times a day and replaced as often as twice a week.

Wash the area around the stoma with a mild soap. Gently pat dry.

    • 3

Inspect the stoma for changes in color or consistency. Let the stoma dry.
