What Roots Are Used in a Colon Cleanse?

Colon cleansing is highly recommended by doctors, nutritionists and other physicians who believe that undigested material causes mucus buildup in the colon resulting in the manifestation of toxins. These toxins are said to have the potential to cause a number of health risks once they enter the bloodstream. There are a number of roots that can be used to prepare a natural colon cleanse in order to maintain a healthy digestive tract and remove these harmful toxins from your body.
  1. Marshmallow Root

    • Marshmallow root is derived from the marshmallow plant and is rich in mucilage, a thick, sticky substance that does not dissolve in water. The mucilage in marshmallow root causes it to swell and become waxy when wet. As a result, marshmallow root is an effective lubricant that coats and soothes irritated gastrointestinal tract membranes. (See reference 2)

    Dandelion Root

    • The roots of dandelions have numerous beneficial properties.

Dandelion root is rich in antioxidants and vitamin A and also contains tannins that act as astringents. It is known as a gentle diuretic and has mild laxative properties. The root of the dandelion stimulates the appetite and increases the production of bile, aiding in the excrement of toxins from the body. The tannins in dandelion root also sanitize the gastrointestinal tract. (See reference 5)

    Black Radish Root

    • Black radishes are usually grown for medicinal purposes.

Black radish roots have antioxidant properties and contain high levels of vitamins B and C, sulfur and fiber. They are used to fight irritable bowel syndrome and stimulate the secretion of bile, which helps to remove toxins from the body. Black radish root is also believed to have antibacterial properties that help to clear the gastrointestinal tract of harmful bacteria. (see reference 3)

    Rhubarb Root

    • Rhubarb roots have purgative and tannin constituents.

Rhubarb root has two characteristics that encourage its use in a colon cleanser. In particular, rhubarb root has purgative properties. This means that it aids in colon contraction and "purges" the bowel. Rhubarb root also contains tannins, or astringent polyphenols, that help to sanitize the bowel of harmful bacteria after it has been purged. (See reference 4)

    Licorice Root

    • Licorice root contains flavonoids that maintain the overall health of the gastrointestinal system by lowering the pH levels (or acidity) of the stomach, relieving heartburn and indigestion. It also acts as a mild laxative. Licorice root can aid in remedying problems associated with inflammation, spasms and irritation in the gastrointestinal tract, and has been proven to heal ulcers.
