Enzyme Therapy for Bilirubin Reduction in Adults
The onset of jaundice symptoms, in which the skin and eyes appear yellow, is one of the first indications that an adult’s bilirubin count may be elevated. Bilirubin is a brownish-yellow substance found in bile created by the breakdown of hemoglobin or old red blood cells. The presence of elevated bilirubin levels can signal serious issues such as pancreatis or infectious hepatitis and requires evaluation by a physician.-
Diagnosis
-
Alcohol consumption, infectious hepatitis, adverse drug interactions and disorders of the autoimmune system can elevate bilirubin. A simple urine test or a blood serum bilirubin test can determine if levels are above normal. Physicians will also run blood tests to rule out other serious issues such as hepatitis or liver disease. Whatever the prognosis, the underlying cause of the jaundice will dictate the form of treatment.
Enzyme Supplement Therapy
-
The body naturally produces enzymes that enable digestion and normal body function. However, poor nutrition or environmental toxins can impair a patient's immune system; supplements can help. Enzyme supplements containing bromelain can improve liver function by boosting the immune system and fighting inflammation of tissue. Other enzymes like papain, trypsin and chymotrypsin also boost the immune system and aid digestion. Improved liver function can in turn return bilirubin to normal levels. Look for supplements that include various blends of these enzymes, but before you add any supplements to your daily routine, discuss it with your physician.
Prevention
-
To maintain normal bilirubin levels, absent of advanced disease or genetic disorder, healthy living is the first line of defense. Excessive and long-term alcohol use damages the liver which can lead to cirrhosis. Maintain a healthy liver with proper diet and nutrition and by avoiding long-term use of alcohol and drugs.
