Follow a basic IBS diet to curb the symptoms therefrom. According to the Mayo Clinic, you can act to reduce the symptoms of IBS by following a diet which is high in fiber and low in gas-causing foods like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. Aim to consume between 25 and 35g of fiber per day, but work up to that amount slowly over time. Try consuming an extra 2 or 3g of fiber per day over your normal amount until you reach your goal. Additionally, avoid problem-causing foods like spicy dishes, high-fat items and dairy.

Adhere to a low-sodium approach by restricting your total sodium intake to less than 2,000mg per day, according to recommendations by the Cleveland Clinic. Get in the habit of "counting sodium" by always making it a point to check labeling information and keeping a running tally so you do not exceed your limit. Never add salt to any dish, and strive to avoid high-sodium items like snack foods, canned fruits and vegetables, and pre-packaged meals.

Maintain a regular food journal listing the foods you eat, their sodium content, and your IBS symptoms to track your progress. Over time, you will develop a feeling for the amount of food you can eat without exceeding your sodium limit along with the types of food that you can eat without irritating your IBS. Do not be afraid to further modify your diet if you discover new foods that irritate your IBS through this method, as only constant reevaluation of your diet plan can keep your symptoms minimized.
