Alka-Seltzer Inactive Ingredients

Alka-Seltzer is a well-known product for relief of upset stomach, acid indigestion, heartburn and pain. It now includes a line of cold remedies called Alka-Seltzer Plus. The different products have different ingredients, with the indigestion remedies having similar ingredients and the cold remedies having ingredients similar to each other. Inactive ingredients may be binders, flavoring, or other substances that are not part of the medication. Alka-Seltzer is widely available over-the-counter. The brand is now part of Bayer.

  1. Alka-Seltzer for Indigestion

    • Alka-Seltzer products include Original, Lemon-lime, Heartburn, Xtra Strength and Gold (which has no aspirin). Original Alka-Seltzer has no inactive ingredients. Lemon-lime inactive ingredients are aspartame, docusate sodium, flavor, povidone and sodium benzoate. Heartburn has acesulfame potassium, aspartame, flavors, magnesium stearate and mannitol as inactive ingredients. Xtra Strength has only flavor. Gold's inactive ingredients are magnesium stearate and mannitol.

    Alka-Seltzer Plus Dissolvables

    • Inactive ingredients for the Fast Powder Packs include acesulfame potassium, anhydrous citric acid, aspartame, calcium silicate, dimethicone, docusate sodium, flavor, povidone, sucralose and sucrose. Fast Powder Packs are the only product in the dissolvables category.

    Alka-Seltzer Plus Effervescents

    • Effervescents include Day & Night Cold Formula, Cold & Cough Formula, Sparkling Original Cold Formula, Night Cold Formula, Sinus Formula, Orange Zest Cold Formula, Cherry Burst Cold Formula and Flu Formula. Inactive ingredients for all but Flu are: acesulfame potassium, anhydrous citric acid, aspartame, calcium silicate, dimethlypolysiloxane, docusate sodium, flavors, mannitol, povidone, sodium benzoate and sodium bicarbonate. Cough & Cold and Orange Zest include FD&C red #40 and yellow #6. Flu has acesulfame potassium, anhydrous citric acid, aspartame, flavors, FD&C#40, magnesium stearate, maltodextrin, mannitol, sodium bicarbonate, maltodextrin and saccharin sodium.

    Alka-Seltzer Plus Liquid Gels

    • Liquid Gel products are Cold & Cough Formula, Day Non-Drowsy Cold Formula, Night Cold Formula, Day & Night Cold Formula, and Mucus & Congestion. Inactive ingredients for Day Non-Drowsy, Night Cold, Day & Night, and Mucus & Congestion are D&C red #33/40, FD&C blue #1, gelatin, glycerin, mannitol, polyethylene glycol 400, povidone, propylene glycol, purified water, sorbitan, sorbitol, and titanium dioxide. Cold & Cough has the same plus butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydroxyloluene, and polyethylene glycol 600. Mucus & Congestion adds hypromellose and Day & Night, Night Cold, and Day Non-Drowsy also contain lecithin, shellac and simethicone.
