How to Change a Bedpan

A bedpan is used when an individual, who is sick or disabled, is unable to stand or walk. Unable to go to the bathroom, she uses the bedpan to relieve her body of waste. Proper sanitation and careful handling of the bedpan must be followed, both to prevent infection and to make the process as comfortable as possible for the disabled individual. Before changing the bedpan, make sure you know if the person has any restrictions on being moved or positioned on the bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands with soap and clean, running water. Put on rubber gloves.

    • 2

Place the head of the bed into a flat position, if the individual has raised it. Grip the bedpan with one hand to prevent the contents from spilling. Assist the individual to roll onto her side (facing away from you) with your other hand.

    • 3

Remove the bedpan from the bed and set it aside. If she is unable to wipe herself, wipe the individual's buttocks and genitals with a tissue, wiping from the front to the back. Use a new tissue for each front-to-back wipe.

    • 4

Roll the individual onto her back, or into a comfortable position on the bed, according to her preferences. Give her a damp cloth to clean her hands.

    • 5

Empty the contents of the bedpan into the toilet. Wash the bedpan out with soap and water. Pour the water into the toilet. Finish cleaning the bedpan with a disinfectant.

    • 6

Remove, and dispose of the rubber gloves. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
