How to Survive Until Disability Is Approved?

Social Security Disability Insurance provides help for many people that can't maintain employment due to serious disabilities. The application process can be a lengthy one, though. The Social Security Administration website says it typically takes three to five months to review an application, but sometimes applications get denied and people must request a review or appeal. Then it takes even longer.

Apply for utility assistance. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) helps with home heating and cooling bills for people with low incomes. Different agencies administer the program in different states, but your county welfare office can probably direct you. You can also simply call your utility companies and ask if they can tell you what agencies offer assistance. In some cases, agencies only help after you've received a shut-off notice.

Apply for housing assistance. Contact your local public housing agency but realize that there is usually a lengthy waiting list. Get on the list but apply for other forms of assistance as well, if available in your area. Contact your local United Way to find out which agencies in your area provide help with rent payments. In some cases, agencies only help after you've received an eviction notice.

Rely on any savings you may have or assets you can access. If you own things that you can sell to help support yourself, do so. If you have a retirement fund and can withdraw the money early, do so only as a last resort.
