How to Replace Power Wheelchair Tire Foams

The foam inserts in the rear wheels of your power wheelchair are designed to last a long time and prevent the worry of getting a flat tire while you're out and about. They work well to this end, but over time they will develop flat spots from sitting in one place too long and wear down overall, causing general discomfort and a bumpy ride. Learn how to replace the foam insert in your wheelchair wheels and restore the comfort you once felt in your chair.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your wheelchair carefully on its side. You may want to lay down a towel or blanket first so as not to scratch the floor or the chair.

    • 2

Wedge a tire lever between the tire and the rim. Pull the tire lever down toward the hub of the wheel, then slide it around the outside of the rim to detach the outer bead of the tire from the rim. You should be able to see the foam insert on the inside.

    • 3

Pry the existing foam insert out of the tire. Most often you can remove the insert by hand, but if it proves difficult, pry it out with the tire lever. Push a new insert up into the tire all the way around the wheel. It should sit in place just like the old one.

    • 4

Wedge the tire lever between the tire and the rim. Pull the lever upward away from the hub to aid in mounting the tire bead back on the rim. Work the tire on little by little until it is secure and even all the way around the wheel.

    • 5

Flip the wheelchair over onto its other side. Replace the foam in the second tire by following the same procedure as the first. When you're finished, take the chair for a spin. You should immediately notice a difference compared with the old, worn-out inserts.
