How to obtain disability payments
Disability payments and benefits are awarded to some individuals with diagnosed disabilities by the U.S. Social Security Administration. Payments are financial, while other benefits may include employment assistance, life and job coaching, Medicaid and other health insurance benefits and counseling services. Submit an application for Social Security disability benefits. Applications can be found online at the Social Security Administration website, at local Human Resources offices or by calling the Social Security Administration. Fill out the application entirely; include information such as income, dependents, marital status, medical records and other personal information. Submit it to the Social Security Administration for review.

Attend a disability claims interview. Whether you file your application online or make an appointment with a representative, you will be required to go through a disability claims interview. You will receive a packet in the mail with information from the Social Security Administration that informs you about how to prepare for your claims interview. During the interview you are asked to confirm the information that you submitted in your application.

Schedule an appointment with a physician if you are informed that you need an additional evaluation for your qualification process. You may be required to attend an appointment scheduled for you by the Social Security Administration The administration often sends applicants to its own physician or expert in the field that relates to a specific disability. The expert may be contracted by the Social Security Administration to perform an evaluation related to your disability and to either confirm or deny your previous diagnosis. You will be informed by mail whether or not you are required to attend an exam as part of your disability application.

Follow up with the representative assigned to your claim. Applying for Social Security disability benefits can take several months or more. Many claimants are denied the first time they apply, but may be approved for benefits on the second or third application. If you have a diagnosed disability, apply for benefits and keep in touch regularly with your representative. They will be able to tell you the status of your application.
