How to Properly Use a Gait Belt

A gait belt is a device that aids in safe transfer of an individual from one place to another. The belt is used as a gripping point for caregivers to aid those who are weak or have trouble standing or walking. Properly attaching the belt and using proper lifting techniques will avoid injury to both the wearer and also the caregiver.

Instructions

    • 1

Inform the individual that what a gait belt is used for and how it works and let him know that it will be removed as soon as the transfer is complete. Answer any questions the person may have before attempting to put the best on.

    • 2

Put the belt on over clothing and attach in the front. Verify the belt is not covering sensitive areas such as the breasts to make lifting the individual as comfortable as possible.

    • 3

Thread the belt through the teeth of the buckle. Pull taught. Lock the belt in place. Many belts will have additional openings through which to thread the belt to establish a firm lock.

    • 4

Check to make sure the belt is not too tight. The belt should not have too much slack that it will move significantly when moving the individual. It should be just tight enough that fingers can get under it for lifting. Any additional belt slack should be tucked into the clip or pushed between the belt and body.

    • 5

Use your strongest arm for lifting the individual. If you are right-handed go to the left side of the bed. If you are left-handed go to the right side of the bed. Place your fingers under the gait belt from the bottom.

Use your free hand to hold onto the individual's arm. Lift gently. The person being lifted should be working with you to move. Ask for assistance from another caregiver if the individual is not helping in lifting or walking during the transfer. Always ask for help if you feel there is a fall risk. Remove the belt as soon as the transfer is complete.
