Check to see if your diabetes qualifies you for disability. Just having the disease does not necessarily mean that you are disabled. The Americans with Diabetes Act stipulates that diabetes qualifies as a disability when it significantly reduces your ability to perform a major life activity - in the present or in the past prior to diagnosis and treatment. It also qualifies as a disability if your employer treats you as disabled.

You will also be required to bring a form authorizing the disclosure of information to the Social Security Administration to your local office. Alternately, you could call the Social Security office between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in order to make an appointment or go directly to your local Social Security office.
