Utilizing speech generating devices allows users to communicate effectively, improving their quality of life. Device choices depend on the users' abilities and their occupational goals. Training for the user and caregivers is necessary in order to effectively use aid for communication.

    • Display Board devices use pictures or icons for communication. Phrases and photos can be customized. This is the type most commonly used for children.

    Devices With Keyboards

    • Devices with keyboards allow users to type a message that is then spoken aloud. Uses text to speech software and message prediction.

    Devices With Eye Tracking

    • A camera tracks eye movement, allowing the user to select options by blinking or scanning the screen. This is an advanced method of assisted communication.

    Multi-purpose Devices

    • Multi-purpose devices include text to speech or eye tracking. They also may be equipped with wireless internet access and Bluetooth technology, and be able to control household devices, including the telephone.
