Individual Disability Grants
According to the 2000 Census, there are more than 50 million Americans living with disabilities, and more than 35 million of them are severely disabled. However, if you or a loved one lives with a disability there are many grant programs run by federal and state entities, as well as by private individuals, that can provide financial relief. These programs offer assistance and funding to help people with disabilities live better lives.-
Federal Programs and Benefits
-
One such federal program is the Tax Help for People with Disabilities, which offers tax relief to individuals with disabilities. Disabled individuals can also qualify for Social Security benefits to receive additional financial support. In addition, there are programs for disabled veterans through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which offer benefits and grant money.
State Funding
-
The Able Trust is an example of a state-funded grant. It is run by the Florida Legislature, and since its founding the group has given out more than $24 million in grants to individuals for employment-related purposes. Check with your state government to see if similar programs are available where you live.
Corporate Grants
-
Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation was established in 1991 and has given millions of dollars in grant money to individuals with disabilities, focusing on youth. It also contributes to other national grant programs that support opportunities for children with disabilities, including the American Association of People with Disabilities and National Inclusion Project. Many other corporations have grant foundations, such as CVS and AT&T.
