How to Apply for Disability in Dallas, Texas

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides a monthly income to some people who cannot work because of a disability. To qualify, people must have worked a certain amount of time in the past and paid into Social Security. Some people who have not worked or paid in enough to qualify for SSDI may qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The amount you can receive each month depends on which type of disability you qualify for, SSDI or SSI, and how much you paid into Social Security in the past.

  Talk to your doctor about whether you might qualify for disability. In order to qualify, you must have a medical condition or disability that prevents you from working, and your doctor must expect your condition to last for at least 12 months or to result in death. Ask your doctor to document in your medical records your prognosis and how your condition prevents you from working.

  Meet with a Social Security Administration representative regarding your application as scheduled. You can choose to meet in person at a Social Security Administration office or you can choose to have a telephone interview.
