Learning Disabilities Games

There are 15 million children, teens and adults with learning disabilities in the US. Learning disabilities are "neurological disorders that can make it difficult to acquire certain academic and social skills," according to the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD), The term describes a person who is of at least average intelligence but often for unexplained reasons, has difficulty receiving, processing, storing and responding to information. If you, your child or student is learning disabled, you may benefit from certain online games.

  1. Math Mahjong

    • Math Mahjong is based on the Chinese tile game.

      Do2Learn.com has a twist on the ancient Chinese tile game Mahjong. Math Mahjong can help you practice addition and subtraction. The game displays a number of overlaid tiles, each with a simple math equation such as four plus two, or seven minus three. Remove pairs of tiles that equal the same number. As you click matching pairs, they'll disappear from the board. You'll also have to match pictures of food and other items. Keep clicking until you've cleared the board. If you need help, click on Hint. You can also adjust the level of difficulty.

    Gus and Inky's Underwater Adventure

    • Gus and Inky's Underwater Adventure is a fun way to learn letter sounds.

      On the Get Ready to Read website, join the adventures of Gus the Bunny and his friend Inky the Octopus. Gus and Inky's Underwater Adventure features a series of games with cartoon scenes before each challenge. The games teach reading, spelling and pronunciation skills. In the compound word game, for example, you're shown pictures of a cup and a cake. Choose the correct compound word from a selection of pictures, in this case "cupcake." An audio track pronounces each word. In the lasso roundup game, you're asked to click on words that all begin with the same letter. Click on the right word and a cowboy lassos and corrals the word. Click on the wrong word and a shark comes out and eats it. Many of the games involve letter sounds, so be sure your computer's volume is on.

    Word Search

    • The Leicestershire Dyslexia Association website has a number of online reading and math games. If you have a visual learning disability such as dyslexia, try the word search puzzle game. Choose which puzzle you'd like from a drop-down menu. The game displays a word jumble with your target words listed alongside. Find the target words and double click on each letter of the word. When you're done, click "select word" and a checkmark will appear if you're correct. Words may be horizontal, vertical, diagonal or backwards.
