How to Receive Disability Payments
The Social Security Administration (SSA) offers disability benefits to individuals who have a sufficient work history involving payment of Social Security taxes and are determined to be disabled. Disabled individuals without a sufficient work history may qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a public assistance program by SSA that provides recipients with a monthly check similar to disability recipients.Instructions

1
Go to your local SSA office or SSA's website to complete an application for SSI and disability. You will need your Social Security number, information regarding your medical, school and employment history, and a listing of all sources of income and resources. You should receive a response within approximately 45 days. If you are denied, proceed to Step 2.
-
2
Consider hiring an attorney that specializes in disability cases to represent you during the appeals process. Disability attorneys do not collect payment until after the case has been won. The maximum amount that may be collected is 25 percent of your back payment amount or $6,000, which ever is lesser.
-
3
Write and submit a letter to your local SSA office within 60 days of the date on the denial letter that states that you would like an appeal. This letter must state your full name and Social Security number.
-
4
Gather medical records, statements from previous employers, school officials, and acquaintances and any other records that support your case. Make a copy of these records and send a copy to SSA.
-
5
Attend the appeal hearing with the administrative law judge (ALJ). During this hearing, you will be allowed to call witnesses and provide testimony supporting your claim for disability. You may also cross-examine any SSA experts, such as the vocational expert or clinical psychologist, during the proceedings. You should receive a decision by mail within 60 days of the hearing. If you are denied again, proceed to Step 6.
-
6
Complete and submit SSA Form HA-520 (see resources) within 60 days of the date on the notice of denial. If you have any supporting documentation that was not submitted previously, submit it. The appeals council will review and make a decision. You will not have to attend a hearing for this level of appeal. If you are denied benefits, continue to Step 7 to read about the final appeal step.
-
7
File an appeal in federal district court against SSA regarding denial of disability benefits. You must have an attorney for this level of appeal.
