How to Get a Michigan Handicap Parking Placard

In order to legally park in a handicap parking space in Michigan a placard or disability license plates are required. Handicap placards can be obtained for a short period of time for those who are expected to recover. Parking placards are also available for up to 4 years for those who have a longer period of disability. This article will show you how to get a handicap parking placard in Michigan.

      Review the qualifications for obtaining a Michigan Handicap parking placard. Michigan law defines qualifying disabilities to obtain the parking permit as the following conditions:

      • Blindness
      • Inability to walk more than 200 feet without having to stop and rest.
      • Use of a wheelchair, walker, crutch, brace, or other ambulatory aid.
      • Lung disease with deterioration in expiratory volume.
      • Some cardiovascular conditions.
      • Arthritic, neurological, or orthopedic condition that severely limits the ability to walk.
      • Persistent reliance on oxygen sources other than ordinary air.

      Visit a Michigan Department of State Branch or go online to michigan.gov/sos (hyper link provided in the resources section of this article) to get a Michigan Placard Application. If you are getting the application online you will need a printer in order to print out the application.

      Schedule an appointment with your physician, chiropractor, or vision care specialist. Take the Michigan Placard Application with you. Have the physician or care specialist fill out Part 2 of the application. Make sure they sign the form and provide their medical license information. If the physician, chiropractor, or vision care specialist is located out of the state of Michigan they will need to provide a copy of their current license to practice.

      Take the completed Michigan Placard Application to any Michigan Department of State branch office or mail the application to:

      Delivered and mailed applications will be processed while the Department of State verifies the health information for applicants. There is no fee for the Michigan handicap parking placard.
