Long-Term Effects of Megace
Megace is a synthetic hormone that is approved to two very different uses. It was initially approved for use in the treatment of endometrial and breast cancer. It was later found to be effective in stimulating the appetite in those with conditions that cause significant weight loss and muscle wasting, such as cancer and AIDS. Megace is available in tablet and liquid form and depending on the indication for use, may be administered up to four times a day.-
Menstruation Changes
-
There may either be missed menstrual periods or breakthrough bleeding between periods when taking Megace. Women of childbearing age who have missed a period while on Megace and suspect pregnancy should immediately stop this drug and consult a physician.
Blood Sugar
-
According to the National Institutes of Health, long-term use of Megace can cause elevated blood sugars in those with and without a diagnosis of diabetes. Diabetics should closely monitor blood sugar levels while on this drug.
Weight Changes
-
While weight gain is a desired effect when Megace is used as an appetite stimulator, it can cause a gain of too much, too fast. Care must be taken to control weight gain in those who are taking this medication long-term for other purposes.
Cushing's Syndrome
-
Cushing's syndrome is a group of symptoms associated with long-term use of certain hormonal or steroidal medications, such as Megace. Severe fatigue, increase in blood pressure and blood sugar, mood changes and abnormal fat distribution on the body are common signs of this condition.
Adrenal Insufficiency
-
The adrenal glands may cease to produce hormones at a normal level when Megace is being taken long-term. Signs of adrenal insufficiency include dizziness, low blood pressure, nausea and vomiting.
