Tonsillitis Symptoms, Prevention & Cure

The tonsils are two tissue balls located on each side of the inner throat. When they become infected, the condition is termed tonsillitis. Although tonsillitis is not usually dangerous, it can be painful and annoying. Fortunately, it can be prevented. If you do get it, its symptoms can be easily recognized so you can take steps to cure it.
  1. Symptoms

    • Tonsillitis is characterized by red, swollen tonsils that may be dotted with white patches. Tonsillitis often causes a sore throat and impairs the ability to swallow. It may be accompanied by a headache, fever and chills. The lymph nodes often swell, and the afflicted person may experience loss of the voice.

    Prevention

    • Tonsillitis is a contagious infection, so washing your hands frequently is the best way to prevent it. Avoid people who are sneezing and coughing, as they may pass along a bacterial or viral infection. Don't share eating utensils or drinking glasses with other people, and avoid contact with anyone who is exhibiting tonsillitis symptoms.

    Cure

    • If you have a case of tonsillitis that is caused by a virus, the Mayo Clinic says you should be able to cure it on your own. If it is a bacterial infection, your doctor may need to prescribe antibiotics. However, viral tonsillitis is the most common type. It will cure itself in a week or two, and in the meantime you can feel better by taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen to reduce fever and pain. Soothe your throat with warm liquids like tea and broth. Gargling with warm salt water may also help your throat. The Kids Health website recommends avoiding spicy and crunchy foods. Instead, it says you should eat soft foods like jello or apple sauce and use popsicles to numb the throat. If your tonsillitis keeps returning, your doctor may decide surgical removal of the tonsils is the best course of action.
